Music is great

Many of our relatives who we are seeing for the first time in a long time over the holidays are struggling with dementia as well as remembering faces and places. It can be scary for both parties, but what can help in many situations is playing their favorite songs.

Many times I have witnessed folks in group homes light up when their favorite Christian hymns are played. In fact many of them who are non communicative join in and dont miss a beat with the lyrics of the song.

This time of year holiday favorites are a great way to reach those with dementia and other memory impairment diseases. Music literally and figuratively strikes a cord with these folks, and makes the emotion of their memory loss much easier to take, for all parties concerned.
